Don Quixote, was it the first postmodern novel or not?

I wanted to get into Don Quixote, but it seems like my literary knowledge is lacking in order to tackle this book.

Since I think this is a parody about knight books it would probably make sense to have read Le Morte d'Arthur and similar works to gauge what is being made fun of by Cervantes.

So my question is this: Do I need any prerequisite reading before reading Don Quixote?
