Is Hyperion a standalone book? Or will I have to invest into the entire series to get a satisfying ending.

I'm interested in science fiction - what are the must-have books that everyone should read?
Also, I really liked the Hyperion books, could you recommend something similar?

Just finished Hyperion and am starting Fall of Hyperion, but my question is should I continue after that? Have heard more negative things about the next two books. Thoughts?

Is this worth reading?

I've never read a science fiction novel and have just finished A Song of Ice and Fire so I wanted to read more fiction.

What's your favorite scifi book /lit/? Need some lighter reading, just spent 2 months reading Hobsbawm's history of the 19th century.

Pic related is what I'm looking for. Something with decent prose, decent story, characters.

I like it until the author kept commenting about how Kassad's balls and scrotum move when he is scared.

Hey /lit/

So I've never really been much of a reader, and I've only read a handful of books that weren't for some class I was taking. But I'm looking to get into it and I thought I'd come here for a starting point.

I'm looking for something dark, mindbending, and surreal. I don't have a frame of reference for literature so my favorite film is Synecdoche, New York, if that helps at all.

Pic related, one of the few books I've read and also my favorite.

I know how you guys hate fiction, but I just finished the Hyperion Cantos for the first time ever and I ... well I don't know what to do now. I think this is the pinnacle of sci-fi for me. I wish some things were more explained or fleshed out but my god what a fucking series and I enjoyed every second of it.

I'm sorry if this series is discussed here often, but I would like to know what people think about Hyperion and its sequels. Which are the best entries, and is it worth reading the entire series? Are the four main books split into distinct pairs that form two separate 'mini series', or do all four constitute a whole, 4-part series?

Who read it and what did you think?

I'm about 3/4ths of the way through Brawne's story (A little more than 3/4ths of the way through the book as well), and I'm ready for the book to be over.

I'm still fairly new to reading, so I'm not going to go so far as to call it a terrible book, but the book isn't very interesting to me (as a whole, there are some good parts).

Sol Weintraub and Silenius have had the best stories so far. Weintraub is the only "down to earth" character, next to the Consul. Silenius has comedic value (Sad King Billy was neat too).

It's not bad, but it's not that great IMO. I'm a little disappointed so far.
