It's garbage because of how unbelievably soulless it all is. This book is empty drivel nostalgic drivel -- you'd be better off finding reading material in 1001 Movies To Watch Before You Die. Basically the same idea as Cline's novel, without the needless and embarrassing, not to mention half-assed, self-insert plot about a nerdy kid who knows all the cool movies from the 80s ever made and wins the BIG VIDEO GAME because of it.
