This is now a Henry James thread, brought to you by Henry Jamesfag who wishes to promote good books on /lit/ instead of schlock like this. You're welcome.

So is Henry James a meme or is he actually good? Where do I start?

Henry James ruined the rest of literature for me. Every other writer I try to read seems infantile in comparison. Shakespeare, Proust, Joyce, and so on...none of them compete with The Master.

I'm reading The Turn of the Screw and the main character seems quite enamoured with the boy she's supposed to be taking care of.
No spoilers though, I'm only like 30 pages in

my thread died while I was asleep so I have to repost it sorry.
>I need some examples of writers who treat sentences like ornate Baroque furniture, pic related, Laurence Sterne, and Thomas Carlyle are my main examples at the moment

other anons have lengthened the list to:
William James
Edgar Allen Poe: Philosophy of Furniture
Thomas DeQuincey's The English Mail Coach
John Lyly's Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit
Sir Thomas Browne's Urn Burial
Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy
John Donne's Sermons
Isaac Walton's The Compleat Angler
Charles Douty's Arabia Deserta
Fuller's Worthies of England
John Aubrey's Brief Lives
Richard Hooker's The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity
William Gass
Jeremy Taylor - Holy Living and Holy Dying
Pynchon: V, Gravity's Rainbow

The Anatomy of Wit is quite good so far btw

I read The Ambassadors and didn't enjoy it as much as I felt I ought to. I loved Portrait of a Lady though.

This is a great idea for a thread. Amazingly, I don't think I've ever seen Henry James discussed before on this board, despite the fact that he's one of the most influential, idiosyncratic authors the world has ever seen.

Is realist literature dying /lit/? Will we soon be stuck with only pomo books being good?

I don't see him discussed much and I don't know where to start? Is he worth it?
