How many of you writerfags maintain Tolkien or Herbert sized universes?

I do, or at least try my best to. It started as one story, and it grew, and the new stories needed backstories, and they needed creation stories and it sort of all organically created itself.

So I come here to today to ask how you keep track of it all, as well as general discussion.
I have spent a large amount of time indexing, and I'm nowhere near complete.

How do you think the big names like Tolkien, Rigney, or Martin handled it?
