Malcolm Lowry - wrote Under the Volcno which is shaping up to be a great novel, very intricate and flowry, bordering on the self-absorbed, but still paints a great picture of Mexico and it's a fantastic allegorical and complex work.

Roald Dhal - wrote some bangin' short stories about the war, and some great ones not about it too! Also wrote some stuff for adults (including those short stories) which are very appealing and have a distinct style which is different from his kids books. His biographical works are pretty cool too.

Aphra Behn - One of the first female novelists and a pioneer for women writers everywhere (onionring wouldn't be furiously using wikipedia to try and act like she knows stuff about philosophy if it weren't for her breaking away and taking the negative stigma of being a female writer). All her works are quite short but Orookono is one of the nice intro ones t her dense and difficult writing style (it has not aged too well)

Wiltold Gombrowicz - Polish modernist author who writes deliciously funny novels full of absurdism and allegories. Ferdydurke is all i've read of his but i recommend it 10 fold, he has one or two other works i'm hoping to check out soon!
