This book has a guy screwing a bug-girl. It's still very highly regarded and has won many awards. I don't really see what the problem is.

I just finished this and it was pretty good.

Also, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and Iain M. Banks' Culture series.

Just finished Kraken. Fuck I can't get enough of China. Barring Iron Council, i could just smooze every one of his books.

I finished all of em now, except the SS one and the kids one. I'd say Perdido stayed my favorite but The City and the City kicked huge ass too. So did Kraken.

Has he said anything about Kraken in relation to Gaiman? the books was really a mashup of Neverwhere and American Gods with a China marinade and some nerd spices.

What do you guys think/know about this?

Kraken = (Neverwhere + American gods)/Mieville + nerd references

I loved this book, /lit/. Can anyone recommend similar books?

I've already read The Scar and Iron Council.

>wish more literature had sort of steampunk magic

You might want to check out China Mieville's Bas-Lag novels then, they're the only works of his with which I am familiar. Perdido Street Station and The Scar are the only ones I read, never got around to reading The Iron Council, they're a mishmash of fantasy and technology. The world was very interesting, and the books themselves were fun reads.

China Miéville. Just... China Miéville.

Sometimes he makes me FUCKIN' RAGE, but I still consider his Bas-Lag books required reading.

Can I get some recommendations for fantasy novels with interesting settings? I've had about all I can take of Medieval Europe + Magic.

Pic definitely related.

PERDIDO STREET STATION = BIRD PEOPLE RAEP

Also in one of the Haruhi Suzmiya books, I forget which one, Haruhi tries to make Kyon rape Mikuru. That was probably the one part of the series that really crossed the line from funny to disturbing.

The badguy in this book is a God-Spider, who brings about the apocolypse in true Lovecraftian manner.

The spider is called the "Doom Weaver"

I mean Jesus Christ, what more do I have to say to get you to read this book?

Ultimate badass spider called "Doom Weaver", might be the greatest name ever.

A little bloated, but it is an introduction to a very large city and world. Maybe too many subplots, but again it's the foundation stone.

The Scar was better. I would never have imagined that such a cold bitch as Bellis Coldwine would actually be a tolerable and interesting protagonist.

The first third of Iron Council is a vague and bizarre chase sequence with completely absent characters. Then it's gay porn. But a great finale.

The best parts are recognizing monsters from D&D manuals.

finally got around to reading this, thank god. I fucking loved it. really made me understand why SF/F is inaccurate nomenclature. Definition of Speculative Fiction.

Also, thank god theres a modern author who knows how to end a book w/ something other thatn, "and then the hero got everything he was working for x 100 and died lord of hte universe. smile.jpg"

sry to start another Perdido thread but i'm just so fired up about it.

Is China Miéville wantonly sesquipedalian or does he simply possess an abstruse genius?

Hey /lit/, i recently started reading this. It's my first foray into fantasy, and while it's somewhat enjoyable so far i've hit a snag that might prevent me from ever enjoying the genre: Descriptions.

Being fantasy, the world is different from our own, therefore things need to be described because the reader doesn't know how everything works. Problem is, i don't like reading descriptions.

Now, i understand Mieville to be rather more florid than the majority of fantasy (or other, for that matter) writers, but i can still picture myself getting annoyed with "simpler" books.

Anyone else have this problem? Are there good fantasy books you can recommend that don't suffer from this overabundance of description?
