What makes literature literature?

What makes a novel good anyway?
I mean i am working on mine and i think that my story is good and the characters too, but i am not a talented storyteller, i'll give 'ya that.
Is the story good enough for a novel so that it can be considered a good work of art?

Or should i just kill myself and end it all :^)
