Entropy is a universal thing right? I feel that a lot of people see "collapse" as something that is finite, something that has an ending. But its a cycle of societal change, as something gets "worse" in one place it gets "better" somewhere else.

What if this is all just shifting social norms.

We get psychopaths like Elliott because they are remnants of old/redundant ideology and do not realize that they are merely victims of changes in society beyond their control. We have a well-off person who has every opportunity to achieve a lot, but the internal combat with their own perceived world is turned to romanticism and then extremism.

Sturm und Drang on the level of Goethe, but missing the isolation that would turn all that hate into himself.
