What does /lit/ think of Sigmund Freud?

So I just finished reading an outline of psychoanalysis by Freud.
It expounds clearly on the methods of psychoanalysis, and how the primary function of psychoanalysis is the uncover repressions, but it doesn't say WHY repressions should be uncovered????????

"On Narcissism: An Introduction" begins with a move that is characteristic of Freud's developing approach to theorizing about the psyche. Freud refers to a psychological state that other theorists have described as abnormal--in this case, exclusive auto-eroticism--and suggests that it might be a more pervasive condition that previously thought, then expands this suggestion even further to indicate that it might actually be a condition common to the psychological makeup of allhuman beings.

Hey /lit/, I have a philosophy question for anyone well-versed with Freud.

What would Freud's position on the notion of 'truth' be? Based upon one's own psychoanalysis?

How does he feel about the possibility of knowing the truth?

Who has the best translations of Freud's work? I'm interested in purchasing his Interpretation of Dreams but I don't want to go off of amazon ratings.

I actually hate my mother and it's embarassing to see my father's taste for women. I don't envy their relationship at all. My father is naive, my mother is shallow and selfish, even though they don't have bad intentions.

Wasn't I supposed to want to sex my mother? How come I'm disgusted by her existence? How is that hate for my father going when I can see the innocent boy that he still is?

I dreamt last night my mother was lying naked on a bed and I was sitting down and I was talking to her and I said about some guy I despised "that man still has sex with his mother, he is just immature, we stopped a long time ago". As if all men did that, I actually woke up and took me a second to realize guys just don't have sex with their mothers, but in my dream it was as normal as "living with parents" or "mom buys you clothes".

I'm surprised at how straight forward this dream was.

IRL I'm close to my mother in personality, but we are nothing alike in the way we think, I disagree more with her than anything, but after I moved out my house I don't even pay much attention to her. I'm closer to my father.

Freudians, I'm listening.

It was hard, but I'm finally coming to my senses and realizing I'm a megalomaniac narcissistic bastard that got involved with this high sense of self as a child because of my position in the family and, now, these childish themes are clashing with my adult life and taking my will to act, as my all-or-nothing mind emerges.

But the search for happiness is only one of the issues, will I be doing right to get down this fake stage or am I not going to be myself? How should I use this to my favour? Are the buddhists right? Is my sense of self that much of an illusion? Is the answer in Jung? Nietzsche? Camus?

I feel naked and I need reading recommendations.

So I'm reading Freud's 'Civilization, Society and Religion'. It's a great book and it makes a lot of sense but I know that nowadays his works have been torn apart and I want to know who to read to get a picture of his critics and their arguments.

I've read a bit of Bloom on Freud and Shakespeare and he seems to say that Freud is really just Shakespeare. My question(s) to /lit/ is, do you guys agree? Does Shakespeare ever evade Freudian analysis, does he offer us more? What do you guys think of Freud? Are there any good theorists out there who try to critique Freud and succeed? What do you like about Freud and if you don't like him, why not?
