Some of the worst crimes in history, the spanish inquisition, islamic conquest of india, blowing up of abortion centers, terrorism, where all carried out in the name of God, and even today in some islamic countries, homosexuals are being pushed off the roof and women who show their hair get stoned to death.

And I would argue that even all the other crimes, like the holocaust were carried out in the name of a higher purpose, a divine rule and permission that the germans were higher than other races. Isn't nacism itself religious?
