I used to love writing. I wrote all the time, about anything and everything and nothing at all. I kept a journal and kept tabs on all of my joys, fears, and heartaches. Then I developed a drug habit and either never had time for it or just didn’t care anymore. Maybe both. For years I simply existed and not once did I pick up a pen. I’ve been clean for a year now and have been trying to get back into it - I’m trying to write about myself. To try and legitimize all the pain I felt and caused those around me by writing something beautiful but…that light that was once inside of me just isn’t there anymore…I can’t quite find the right language to use. Just staring at a blank screen, writing the occasional garbage line, and deleting it immediately after.

Has anyone experienced this? I want to write.

Just finished the first chapter and happy to discuss my thoughts with others.

I think the inner dialogue and actual dialogue fit very well when they're melded into one as Bulgakov uses the same apostrophes, instead of speech marks. I've heard that this functions like diacritical marks, since it gives an inflection and "voice" to both thought and speech, e.g. melding them into one will streamline reading. Examples of this include Cormac McCarthy when he leaves out speech marks, making his prose one pace and univocal throughout.

The content about meeting Kant for breakfast and discussing his proofs made me laugh too. This is a very strong start to a novel. We already see such strong characters, told in a very masterful style.

Tell me your thoughts, /lit/.

>be member of Russian intelligentsia during the Soviet era
>hate the soul-numbing effects of leftist ideology, but also value your life and having your work published
>opt for peaceful reform within the parameters of the system and satire instead
>get called a "leftist" 80 years by people on a Sri Lankan origami picture show internet site

you don't get to become as BASED as pic related and write things like Morphine and Heart of a Dog through the cultural sickness that is leftism.
