Personally I prefer dark wood. I would go with elegant bookshelves with long shelves. Space them out so theyre not right next to eachother but not too far away. I would organize the books by genre, then author, but not necessarily a-z. I would just make sure that the books that look the nicest or are your favorites are the centerstage. As for furniture I would get a sofa for when you want to lay down and an arm chair only if you want. You can use a sofa as an arm chair but you cant use an armchair as a sofa. I would go with a large but low coffee table placed, obviously, by the sofa and/or armchair. Make sure the reading spots get good sunlight, but as >>19188551 said, avoid keeping the books in the sun or by the windows. For other decorations I recommend paintings and plants. Painting above the bookshelves and plant in between them where you have room. I like the look of deep greens with dark wood so I would go for a forest green rug and accent it with nice curtains and nature landscape paintings. Red a classy red would also look very nice. Hard colors are masculine and will avoid the effeminate vibe you're wanting to get away from. Also, every so often on the shelves I'd leave empty space for some other kind of item. I dont mean soulless nicknacks and funkopops, i mean something like a little statuette, or used candles, or framed photos of family, and/or authors you like. Perhaps if you really like the look of a specific book you could give it a little nook where it has a couple feet of space dedicated to showing it off instead of just shoving it in with all the others.
Overall, the aesthetic I would go for is elegant and cozy.
My dream library also has a fireplace by the reading nook, a writing desk, an oil portrait of Tolkien, and a grand piano that my imaginary wife plays lovingly while I read
Good luck with your build I hope you post updates every so often, fren

>pic related, I would give this book its own "nook" on a shelf because I think it looks very nice and I love moby dicks
