Maybe Shea just feels fresher. His own vocabulary of rare words is different from Vance's, so you won't see "punctillio" five times. Shea has a slightly different take on Cugel, who has developed since the first adventure and actually does seem like a clever guy who just keeps getting into impossible scrapes.Vance usually wrote him as a hapless moron who was the cause of his own problems. Shea's original character Mumber Sull is a bit different from Vance's archetypical straight man and makes a good foil for Cugel. Also, Vance has a bit of a hokey clunkiness in some of his worldbuilding, which Shea avoids while still being mostly faithful to the vision- I'm not sure how to put it better, but aesthically Vance is Flash Gordon while Shea is Star Wars Ep IV.
