This is now a HCSB-onlyist thread.

Removes the archaisms, preserves meaning while remaining accessible, it's based on pretty solid Anglophone scholarship, and it's still pretty beautiful even though aesthetics isn't the main goal. Most of the criticisms are minute preferences or just a general rejection of Protestantism prima facie. Although I'll just be cliché and emphasize the best translation is the one you actually read. I like the KJV well enough and use it as a baseline since it's commonly used even today.

The whole point of the Good Samaritan is xenophilia and one of the central axes of Christianity is love of those who are foreign and disadvantaged is equal to loving God. "What you did for the, you did for me."

HCSB has Evangelical bias but is overall the most internally consistent translation and has the highest degree of beauty.

Unironically becoming a Baptist seminarian is one of the fastest ways of becoming socially popular, and in particular it's a highly effective way of attracting women. More precisely, a specific demographic of white women who live in the Bible Belt. There are a lot of young women who desperately want to marry a pastor, whether out of sincere religiosity or, cynically, because pastors often become wealthy and powerful. At the same time, many men who grow up in the South tend to be contemptuous of this career because they see literacy and formal oratory as effeminate. In a broader, long term sense this is why clerical celibacy is preferable since there are a lot of corrupt men who've taken advantage and continue to take advantage of this phenomenon. It's no wonder why so many articles come out later on about them being perverted, abusive, or otherwise unscrupulous. Still, I'm sure quite a few of you would want to indulge yourselves.

The best translation is the one that you actually read and engage with critically. That being said, the HCSB is the next best version after the KJV and Douay-Rheims since its prose is accessible, yet relatively faithful to the original texts.

The best Bible version is the one that you read. That being said, I'd recommend the HCSB. I second the recommendation that you read Fromm. Further, it'd be good to study other religions besides Christianity, particularly Buddhism, to truly get a sense for what it means, or at least, what it can mean to be religious. As an introduction to that, I'd recommend Refuge.

There's plenty to critique about Christianity, but reducing it to pedos in skirts and sky fairies is a mistake. Christianity is fundamental to what we know of as the West as a meaningful force in humanity, for better or for worse.

It's the English version that's most commonly referenced across modern history and the most saturated in modern culture, but there are definitely more accurate, faithful, and accessible translations. Of course, at the end of the day, the best Bible is the one you actually read and engage with.
