I read a lot of "operator" and "survival" novels that are often written by ex-military guys. What never fails to make me smile is when every person in the story has SOME connection to the military. Whether it's the cute widow who "just gets" our hero because her late husband was an Army Ranger or if the guy slinging hotcakes and patties in front of the diner grill was in the Coast Guard back in the day.
