How was Lovecraft talking about opening the pineal gland to see higher reality and interdimensional beings? Was he initiated into something?

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

Why was he such a hardcore racist? It can't be because of his era since his contemporaries don't share the same level of vitriol he has on non-Anglos.

Just finished At The Mountains of Madness. I liked it, though its a shame it wasn't the start of a much larger work.

Also the memes are true:

Lovecraft's "The Outsider" may be my favorite of his stories. However I have a question;

Please note I will include spoilers from here on so if you haven't read the story, but are interested, its all for free online.
---------------------------------------------------------

During the beginning of the story, narrator described living in a castle for many years by himself. He then mentions "Outside, across the putrid moat and under the dark mute trees, I would often lie and dream for hours about what I read in the books; and would longingly picture myself amidst gay crowds in the sunny world beyond the endless forest. Once I tried to escape from the forest, but as I went farther from the castle the shade grew denser and the air more filled with brooding fear; so that I ran frantically back lest I lose my way in a labyrinth of nighted silence." He also mentions vine-encumbered trees that silently wave twisted branches far aloft and says they grow so high they block out the sunlight.

However, as we know by the end of the story, he was a corpse the entire time reawakened in a crypt. It is told fantastically, but with that knowledge I want to know what Lovecraft meant by a putrid moat and trees as there would be neither in the basement of a mausoleum.

Could he be describing something different but misinterpreted what it was as he gained all his knowledge from "moldy books"?

The narrative of his stories is almost impossible to follow. I'm reading "The case of Charles Dexter Ward" and by page 10 I was already lost.
Is Lovecraft the ultimate /lit/ casual filter?

“The rumour now spread widely that these houses contained the leaders of a vast band of terrorists, who on a designated day were to launch an orgy of slaughter for the extermination of America and of all the fine old traditions which The Street had loved. Handbills and papers fluttered about filthy gutters; handbills and papers printed in many tongues and in many characters, yet all bearing messages of crime and rebellion. In these writings the people were urged to tear down the laws and virtues that our fathers had exalted; to stamp out the soul of the old America—the soul that was bequeathed through a thousand and a half years of Anglo-Saxon freedom, justice, and moderation.”

-H.P. Lovecraft, The Street
