A local poet visited my primary school when I was eight or nine. Everyone in my year had been assigned the task of writing a poem a week earlier: he was going to judge them, then read his favourites aloud.

My poem came in first place. I won a book voucher (£5, maybe £10). I can still remember it -

'I am a show-off, look at me,
I'm better than anyone you can see!
I'm better at reading, I'm better at maths,
In fact, you could say I'm the best in the class.

I stand in front of the class every day,
They listen to everything I have to say.
I've forgotten to mention just one feature,
The fact that I am the classroom teacher.'

I can scarcely imagine how bad the rest were if that was the best.

Oh, I've been there, my friend. It wasn't drama, was it? All the aspiring writers I've been with have written drama. (Drama is the lowest literary form)

I wish I could meet more interesting (older) people. Nobody my age (myself included) has any stories, except those that start with 'This one time I was so drunk/high/hungover'.

I have an hour-long bus commute into work every day, so I've become pretty dependent on podcasts (I often don't feel like reading that early in the morning). I think the medium is completely underrated.

My favourites are

>The Morning Stream
Daily, part of the fantastic 'Frogpants Network'. Nerdy, light-hearted, topical. Just a lot of fun.

>Comedy Bang Bang
A weekly show that features some of my favourite comedians. Ostensibly in an interview format, but it normally 'descends' into absurd role playing with hilarious characters. Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, Paul F. Tompkins, Andy Daly, Zach Galifianakis and Will Forte have featured, amongst many others.

>In our Time with Melvyn Bragg
Great show, in which the host briefly explains important intellectual trends, innovations and ideas with a panel of experts (ordinarily university lecturers). Lots of topics covered already - from time travel to Newton to Byron.
