In the last part of Phaedo, there's a long passage where Socrates describes the Earth "above" and says things like it having beautiful colors, and the people there seeing things purely and more clearly than us, and other such things. What was the point of this description and what does it refer to exactly? I don't get it

Is there a website or book that summarizes all Plato's dialogues?

I've finished read his complete works but didn't take any notes and would like to go back to his ideas in the future

I've never read a book in my life and I'm trying to become more literate. I'm by no means a retard, I aced English in high school despite not reading the books in the curriculum (not a brag). I've just never enjoyed reading books and could never get into them, and even if I did, I'd forget what I read the next day. I really want to explore the works of philosophers and read good novels. I've read the wiki and it has been quite useful. I just want a second opinion on what I should begin with, before I "waste" my time reading a book.

Sorry bros, I know you guys probably get a lot of threads like this.

I'm 19m btw

Is there any Plato reading chart? If not, could an anon help me out? In what order should I read him, is every work essential or can I skip some? I'm interested in his thought as a whole, but mainly metaphysics

Plato's dialogues are basically the thinker already knowing his thoughts in advance and the other raising objections that the author thought of himself. They are the equivalent of a retard on 4chan arguing with himself using different IPs. What a joke.

Pedophilia. Is it immoral? I've never heard nor read (emphasis on the READ) any compelling arguments to justify that stance. Perhaps you can change my mind.

Pic unrelated. Obviously. Or is it?

I think Plato's works should be part of the Scriptures.

He can be considered an essential part of the historical process of revelation of God. Thanks to his influence, the Israelites changed their understanding of YHWH, that they previously saw only as a possessive and jealous despot, and started appreciating His rationality that reveals itself in the mathematical beauty of the physical world.

absolutely and completely based. There was a point in my life where I wanted to be a psychiatrist, but once I started getting into the philosophy of psychiatry; talking to actual psychiatrists; and volunteering on a mental health ward, I recognized how bunk the whole field is. Psychiatrist specifically, not therapy/social work/etc. this resonated with me the most:

>Would also want him to be almost religiously suspicious of medication-based treatments, except for the most severe cases of mental illness. This would go hand in hand with his deep and sensitive appreciation of the complexities and mysteries of the human mind, because blasting the mind with chemicals implies a simplistic chemical-material metaphysics of the mind, a dangerous credulity about what his textbooks taught him, and a dangerous relationship to patients, in which he can shrug his shoulders and prescribe them pill cocktails until something "sticks."

We really still know so little about the brain, and the relationship between brain and mind/self. Shit, they have THEORIES as to how Wellbutrin works, but they can't say for certain what its modes of causation are on the brain. It all comes down to showing statistical significance. Fuckin a', I feel for the people that are on these drugs for 20, 30, 40 years. Let see how they turn out then. Too bad there is no data yet. Psychiatry is philosophically bankrupt, and I'd kill to sit down and have a beer with (You) anon. thanks for reading my blog. go read some RD Laing too, he's good. and Ghaemi's 'On Depression'.

Wow, Plato really did say everything worth saying. For years I've found Western Zen practitioners -- especially those in the habit of discussing Zen online -- to be some of the most obnoxiously egocentric people around while banging on about ego-free living. But I've never been able to articulate the criticism as succinctly and elegantly as this:

"How much pride you expose to view, Diogenes, by seeming not to be proud."

Reworked:

"How much ego you expose to view, ____, by seeming to be ego-free."
