>"In the olden days we called it the last roundup," DL explained. "Liked to scare each other with it, though it was always real enough. The day they'd come and break into your house and put everybody in prison camps. Not fun or sitcom prison camps, more like feedlots where we'd all become official, nonhuman livestock."
>"You've seen camps like this?" At once there seeped into the cheery space a silence like a stain in the light. Ditzah, at her editing table trembling, seemed to turn her body from what DL would say, to present less of a target, but DL only answered evenly.
>"Yep, I've seen 'em, your mom was in one, you'll recall, but better than us reminiscing and boring you, go to the library sometime and read about it. Nixon had machinery for mass detention all in place and set to go. Reagan's got it for when he invades Nicaragua. Look it up, check it out."
What book should I check out from my local library to learn about this?

Later than usual one summer morning in 1984, Zoyd Wheeler drifted awake in sunlight through a creeping fig that hung in the window, with a squadron of blue jays stomping around on the roof. In his dream these had been carrier pigeons from someplace far across the ocean, landing and taking off again one by one, each bearing a message for him, but none of whom, light pulsing in their wings, he could ever quite get to in time.

Overall kind of mid so far, but the part where the bona fide badass anime cutie DL Chastain all of a sudden gets jackhammer fucked and cummed on by an old ugly bastard gave me the biggest hard on in a month. Have you had moments like this?

What did DFW mean by that in reference to Vineland?

Just finished Vineland by Pynchon and I have to say it was a lot better than the Crying of Lot 49, despite being insanely wacky at times. I am curious about peoples' interpretations of the story. To me the main theme was an indictment of the 60s hippie era and how baby boomers had failed the following generations. However, it also seemed to be Pynchon's own take on 1984: it was set in that year, government control and spying are a huge part of the stort, and the Tube is essentially a realistic 80s version of the Telescreen from 1984. Thoughts?

>Fortunately Ralph Wayvone's library happened to include a copy of the indispensable Italian Wedding Fake Book, by Deleuze & Guattari
This is the strangest joke I've ever seen in a Pynchon novel, what on Earth does it mean?

>"No, no —" quickly, her head dropping just for the moment, "Dad, that's exactly the way I feel too, that. . . she's the only one for me." Then shaking back her hair, looking up again, stubborn, sure, out of Frenesi's blue eyes. The moment may have called for him to embrace her, but her remarks, by now familiar, about the role of jailbait in his emotional life warned him that this time he'd better refrain, even now when he most needed some kind of hug himself — only nod instead and try to look competent, call her Trooper, maybe sock her on the shoulder for morale
Huh??? Why would you refrain from hugging your daughter just because she mentioned you not falling for liberal ressentimental age spooks?

This was the last Pynchon I had left to read. I was worried it would leave me disappointed but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. It's made me go back and re-read inherent vice.

So what is the animosity towards it? It's not Pynchon-lite either, the narrative at times is as difficult or even more so than the most demanding passages in GR.

If anyone has put off reading it because they fear disappointment or a waste of time I urge you to give it a shot if you enjoy Pynchon.

went through this fucker just because I liked the characters. The ending was a total letdown however and I still have no fucking clue about the motivations of neither Brock Vond nor Frenesi.

now you tell me why this guy is considered one of the most important writers ever, because I just don't get it.

What is /lit/'s opinion on Vineland?
I'm considering jumping straight to Mason & Dixon if this was a considerable dip in quality from V., 49 and GR.
