how's it going /lit?

can we have a thread where we simply post anything (articles, blogs, essays, topics etc) that we found intellectually stimulating and interesting?

I'm kinda sick of aimlessly jumping from wikipedia article to article in an attempt to augment knowledge.

how's it going /lit/?

i think to myself and, when i'm stoned, declare vociferously to my friends about the notion of happiness being subjective (obvious).
I posit to them that 'happiness' or total contentment is an unattainable ideal which i will explain thusly>>> (this may seem erroneous but i think there is sometihng to be learnt about the nature of happiness and the way in which it should be treated with utter indifference)

Scenario 1 : poor Brazilian boy derives X amount of pleasure from receiving a soccer ball for his birthday

Scenario 2 : Wealthy family man derives X amount of pleasure from receiving a 150,000$ Mercedes from his daughter for his birthday.

There are obviously salient flaws in this notion (lots of confounding variables too) but can someone elucidate or educate me? Point me in the write direction.
Do any literary figures write about this kind of thing>?

ITT, last 3 books you read.

Mine were "100 years of solitude", "simulacra and simulation" and "the black swan".

how is this for an opening

The thick aroma of grounded coffee beans painted the welcoming, monotonous café brown with satisfaction, teasing the corner of my mouth, the epitome of pleasure succeeded a sneer. My cold hands tainted by the pale, ghostly drops of rain concealing my sanctuary in a frosty mist. The warm smile of my comforting, British tender was exquisite as the remnants of the creamy, frothing latte swum elegantly, soothing my gentle throat. Complete undisturbed harmony.
As the vintage, iron veranda fell victim to the elements, the conversations aroused were, no doubt, fueled by the wood fire projecting spicy charcoal scents to the nearby audience, whom were accompanied by the graceful, worn books found ageing by the wall. The company of complete strangers was comforting.

Hey /lit/
I recently started up extension english (16 year old australian) it's pretty difficult, but i think i can do it. Problem is, I missed the first term of it due to me doing a lower level of english.
What I need help with is just the basic elements of the Gothic genre.
My assessment task is:
Write a Gothic narrative that incorporates elements of the gothic genre (1500 - 1700 words)
I don't want you to answer the question, just need help with the understanding of the gothic genre, and how i could incorporate it.
thanks in advance.

Are your dreams are a source of inspiration when you write?

Hello /fit/
Give me some thought provoking and deep books...
Something meaningful...

here's the catch; I'm pretty fucking dumb and don't use my brain that often so it needs to be pretty basic and easy to read stuff....

Here is what I've read and enjoyed;
Les Chants de Maldoror (Am having a hard time comprehending this book but am really enjoying it)
Bruce Lee; Artist of Life (the guy was a good thinker as well as an excellent martial artist)
Fight Club
Art of War
48 Laws of Power

Here is what I tried to read but couldnt comprehend/enjoy;
Book of Five Rings (bunch of zen bullshit that's really just inane...sounds good in a martial arts movie but thats about it)
Divine Comedy (could not understand what the hell was going on in the whole book)
The Prince (Im going to give this another try seeing as though I didnt put too much effort into it the first time)
