Classic? Worth reading? Or is it just another fantasy book that isn't worth reading.

I've heard a lot about it but not sure if it's worth my time. I don't typically consider books that have the authors name IN MEGA HUGE FONT.

Sup /lit/ I just finished reading A Game of Thrones and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I intend to read the whole series but I want to read more than just fantasy. I want to be able to identify themes and the deeper meaning within books. How does one do this? Should I start off with simple books such as Fight Club then work my way up the ladder? I know that there are post secondary classes for this but the program I am taking doesn't offer English at that level.

tl;dr
>I want to understand the deeper meaning in books how do I do this?

Hello /lit/, an enthusiastic fantasy reader here currently reading A Song of Ice and Fire. But what I'm wondering is what should I read after I'm done with this series? Currently I'm thinking either the Discworld books or American Gods. Thoughts?

How does /lit/ feel about A Song of Ice and Fire series, as well as George R.R Martin overall?

Does this get any better? I'm around seven chapters in and the constantly shifting perspectives with no real relation to eachother are making it incredibly difficult to not throw this disjointed piece of shit on the fire.

Holy shit this book is the most depressing thing I have ever read. Nothing good happens, ever. It's like it is deliberately written to be as horrible as possible by making you care about characters then fucking them over in the worst way possible.

I've never read anything like this. Jesus even 1984 was uplifting compared to this.

I've asked for Game of Thrones for christmas. I've only read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but I want more fantasy. I'm headed to Borders in a bit. Is there anything worthwhile I should pick up? Perhaps another of Tolkien's works? I'm looking for something in vein of the aforementioned novels. No Science Fiction please. Just some well-written, well-regarded fantasy series (or standalone books).

Thanks in advance.

I've never read GRRM before (inb4 nerd rage) but I just saw a preview for the HBO series and it looked pretty cool

for those of you who have read the series I was wondering if it looks like it'll be a fair adaptation of the books
can I judge the series based on the show or does it look like a flop?
