>Nietzsche on Emerson.—Much more enlightened, more roving, more manifold, subtler than Carlyle; above all, happier. One who instinctively nourishes himself only on ambrosia, leaving behind what is indigestible in things. Compared with Carlyle, a man of taste.

Poe had the reverse view of things, although he liked Emerson a good deal more than the average transcendentalist.

>Poe opposed the Transcendentalists’ brand of abolitionism and their individualism; he thought they were derivative, harboring plagiarists (Poe saw plagiarism everywhere) and thought Emerson himself a pale imitation of Thomas Carlyle

Nietzsche read Emerson when he was young and really loved him. The friendship between Carlyle and Emerson is meaningful considering the way that their critics tend to divide into appreciating one but strongly disliking the other. Poe was not a materialist but his endorsement of Carlyle over Emerson does lend credence to Nietzsche's distinction.

Are there any good modern horror books? Or is this genre completely dead now?

I thing that Edgar Allan Poe its the best writer ever. His best works are the terroresque grotesque short stories, while his poetry was not too notch, but still very good lik A Dream Within A Dream.

Why i thing he is the greatest? Because he was the most original, immaginative and stylish i read. He created August Dopin, that later Artut Conan Doyle copy him and create Sherlock Holmes (badly). He writes Dorian Grey, his only long story, even if its not top notch, was still stylish and original, for this work Jules Verne copy him and start the adventurous baroque literary genre (badly). He influenced a lot of post artists, like Lovecraft, Baudelaire...that tried so bad to copy him badly.

He was a journalist, and this job influenced his style. Was highly imaginitive and fictional, but the words were still logical, fine, elegant.

Please, suggest me something to read that is so good. After i read Poe, i dislike all literature. I tryed among others: Cecov, Crime and Punishment, kafka, frankestein....
