Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?

On the one hand, you can get deep specific knowledge on a topic, though your view may become myopic.

On the other hand, you may know a lot about many different topics, thereby giving yourself a cohesive and somewhat comprehensive worldview, but your understanding may be limited by shallowness.

I prefer physical books over reading from a screen, but some of the books I want to read are quite expensive. Some hardcover-only books cost $40 when you buy them second-hand. That creates a bit of a barrier, but if they aren't hard to sell again in the future, then it's like I'm simply storing part of my purchasing power in the form of books rather than euros.

Is that an accurate way to look at it? I have the money to buy the books; my concern is solely with converting it back to money. Things I have considered are selling them individually on Amazon for the lowest price, selling the entire collection at once, and trading them for Amazon gift cards. Does anyone have experience with these things? How long did it take to get rid of your collection? Were there many books that were hard to sell, especially when you have esoteric interests?

Are there any guidelines to picking good translations without spending too much time on the choice? Like in what language to read it. I can read Dutch and English without problems. I pick a Dutch translation when the original is in a Germanic language, but I'm not sure what to do when it comes to Russian, French or Spanish literature.

Another issue is which edition to pick once I've chosen the language. Are newer translations generally better? Are there better heuristics than translation year?

If only these Catholics could read the actual fucking Bible instead of gay Hippo documents. I don't follow after any sect; I'm a lone follower and the pagan bullshit in Catholicism is seen by even non-Christians.
