That's just because Chomsky is severely autistic and fell for the meme that every action is a moral action, so everything he does has to be for "le greater good", meanwhile Foucault is raping kids lecturing the working class on being nationalist. It's pretty funny to see Chomsky literally call continental philosophy cringe, but it's clear he's never moved outside of his anglo bubble.

Under which rubric can I find books (or articles) that place philosophers and philosophical problems, movements etc. in historical, social / political contexts? I mean texts that elaborate on what, for example, was going on in late 18th century society that was pertinent for Fichte writing about natural rights and government power; the way the Holocaust related to the ethics of postwar philosophers; the position and authority of Church and State for 1960s-70s people like Derrida... So not a history of ideas but social context of philosophy, that deals with socio-political implications of certain positions in their contemporary society.

Biographies seem somewhat fit for this, and I've put the biography of Derrida on my backlog, but I'm looking for broader works that take e.g. German idealists or second-half 20th century French philosophers as their subject matter.
