This, the guy who came up with Grape Nuts was nonstop coming up with lame shit to eat because he thought it was the next best thing to chemical castration.

This guy gets it. Expensive, not especially nutritious, and mediocre to the palate at best. Nobody ever got swole eating cheerios.

I actually know a rich super Jewish kid from Long Island who was a star in football and lacrosse in high school.

1. World History
Penguin History of the World: Might as well start with an anthology. From there move on directly 20th century U.S. foreign policy. You can pick where to go from there but that's two books that will put you way ahead of the curve in a hurry.

2. Maths
Go back and brush up on high school level pre-calculus math. From there do a very basic study of calculus and a heavy-duty study of formal logic. From there you should be able to decide what you want to do. If you study more computer science you'll want to keep going in logic and add on discrete mathematics.

3. Philosophy
Same way everyone at University does it. MIT Opencourseware survey course plus logic.

4. Applied Sciences
You're gonna have to pick one. I'd personally say to go after computer science because it interfaces directly with math as you study that. Again, MIT opencourseware is the most straightforward place to start with this. Studying any other engineering field to a worthwhile degree pretty much requires a university setting, but you can go a long way on your own with CS.

It's not that deep. The references to very old plays and emblems are interesting, but as far as what's actually happening, the book is simply meant to make you feel Oedipa's exasperation and paranoia that she's being played by a man/author she can't interrogate.

Inherent Vice is essentially a postscript to Lot 49, to perfect the impression Pynchon wanted to give of California in the 60s, so you might learn something from reading it (I think Lot 49 and IV should be published as one volume), despite what the elitists on here say about IV.

Pynchon even disowned TCoL49 in the foreword to Slow Learner. It isn't nearly his best, so don't go worrying that you've missed out on something huge.
