How can I better understand poetry?

I'd like to read some works like 'Paradise Lost', but I feel that I'd just be wasting my time as I won't understand them, and in turn, appreciate them.

The closest thing to resembling poetry that I've read, and isn't the King James Bible or Quran, is Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'.

>The Measure is English Heroic Verse without Rime, as that of Homer in Greek, and Virgil in Latin; Rhime being no necessary Adjunct or true Ornament of Poem or good Verse, in longer Works especially, but the Invention of a barbarous Age, to set off wretched matter and lame Meeter; grac't indeed since by the use of some famous modern Poets, carried away by Custom, but much to thir own vexation, hindrance, and constraint to express many things otherwise, and for the most part worse then else they would have exprest them. Not without cause therefore some both Italian, and Spanish Poets of prime note have rejected Rhime both in longer and shorter Works, as have also long since our best English Tragedies, as a thing of itself, to all judicious ears, triveal, and of no true musical delight; which consists onely in apt Numbers, fit quantity of Syllables, and the sense variously drawn out from one Verse into another, not in the jingling sound of like endings, a fault avoyded by the learned Ancients both in Poetry and all good Oratory. This neglect then of Rhime so little is to be taken for a defect, though it may seem so perhaps to vulgar Readers, that it rather is to be esteem'd an example set, the first in English, of ancient liberty recover'd to heroic Poem from the troublesom and modern bondage of Rimeing.

It feels so weird to call John Motherfucking Milton pretentious, but I honestly can't think of any other explanation for this. You don't want to write your 11-book-long epic poem in rhyme. Fine. No problem. Also no need to be an arrogant prick about it, especially when the poem you're writing is a story about being an arrogant prick.

>"God Is Not Dead"
I get that you aren't serious about this and aren't a real life Christian and just trolling but fuck me that movie gets on my nerves. The majority of college students are religious, religious campus groups across all universities tend to have more membership than any other group.

Also, fuck you for taking Nietzsche's quote of context. I'm so tired of talking about Nietzsche, he was a terrible fucking writer, a terrible fucking philosopher and a probably an extremely unpleasant man in personal life. The point of the Mad Man story wasn't Nietzsche's bold endorsement of atheism or any fucking thing like that like both sides of this retarded debate seem to think, the point was that God was no longer the focal point of western culture. Veneration, understanding of, and appeasement of God wasn't concerning people in their day to day lives due to scientific and commercial progress. That's it. Nietzsche definitely didn't like Christians but he also lamented the passing of Christianity (or as he saw it) due to the cultural cornerstone it had provided for the west.

Is it edgy to feel sympathy for Satan? I am only in Book 6 but I feel like this slight twinge of respect for a creature that attempts to challenge an omnipotent and omnipresent being. I really liked the part where he and the other spirits debate about how to fight something that knows literally everything. Plus I get some serious Odyssey vibes from this too, especially when he was travelling to Earth. So I think Milton wanted you to feel SOMETHING besides utter contempt for Satan. Trying hard not to impose my 21st century sensibilities onto this while reading it.

Am I pleb for reading this in the first place?

I don't really get this epic. It's hard to understand how God’s plan and free will is compatible. So, does Satan act on his own accord or is he just a puppet to God?

Christian here. My viewpoint of hell has always been that the fire and brimstone is more symbolic, what hell actually is, is being in a place completely cut off from the presence of God. As a Christian I believe that all people, regardless of what they personally believe, sill have their lives influenced by God in some way. But true hell is something you cannot know in this life. It is to have your soul cut off from its source.
