When I had cancer and everyone brought me sappy YA novels with a note in the first page about whether there's a happy ending or not

I forgot my Borges compendium and had to read Fault in our Stars and some Stephen Hawking book. Young nurses in HDU kept making conversation with me about how much they loved that book and more guys should read. Every night, in a room lit by the whirring machines which wired me, we'd sit and chat about the characters and stories which had brought them to tears. I started to realise there is something to be gained from YA fiction, just not from the reading.
