Yes, the book is well worth reading.
You don't need to be a "follower" or plan to be one. You don't need to have a plan to accept or embrace anything before reading the book, although afterwards, it is certain to influence you in some way.

Possibly interesting anecdote: There was a very famous survivalist writer back in the 70's named Mel Tappan. He was an interesting person for many reasons, and is regarded as one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable people ever to write on the subjects of survival, guns, retreat selection, etc.

He recommended many books, but one caught my eye-- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. That didn't sound like the other books on wild edible plants, emergency first aid, and radiation-- he mentioned that some of the books had "different literary merit", but that all were classics in their field. I knew he meant Atlas Shrugged, but didn't know why. No Internet back then. Years later, haunting some library or another (still no Internet!) I stumbled across the book, and finally read it. And now I know. Now I know why Atlas Shrugged was listed as mandatory reading for people trying to prepare for a withdraw from "normal" society, and a possible collapse.

Oh, there's a book made just for that, I promise you... a spiritual tonic to cure you and rejuvenate you, and give you a second chance at life. Atlas Shrugged. Read it first and feel about it afterwards.
