Why is this boring trite consistently praised as one of the best fantasy books ever written?

>describes absolutely nothing
>expects the reader to already know the characteristics of the different societies and races
>some character descriptions are reduced to naming their race
>go to the glossary to know more about that race
>"Trell: Society of nomadic warriors"
>spend the rest of the day looking for fanart to at least understand how the characters look like
No wonder nobody wanted to buy their script.

I want to spaz out like a retard.

Ok, so now that I just got accustomed and got to know Pale's cast and Bridgeburners and Sail and plot started moving forward, HE MOVES PLOT COMPLETELY TO A DIFFERENT CITY WITH DIFFERENT CAST AND DOESN'T EVEN PARTICULARLY BOTHER TO EXPLAIN WHO ARE THEY, WHAT THEY DO EVEN WHEN OUR BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNIVERSE IS SO FLIMSY!

I get that he establishes relationship between Moon's Spawn's Anomander Rake, Daruhjistan's relationship with Malazan conquest, but fuck me, it feels less like world-building and more like world dump. Is the writer ADD? I believe you have 6 POVs in chapter 6.

That said I am interested in where the book is going, I just wish it settled on the cast already.

Read two chapters of Gardens of the Moon. I don't follow it, the first chapter was about mage hunter and dude from Prologue investigating massacre of one village. Then it jumps to another cast of characters where a chick reminisces about epic battle where her friend got turned into Pinocchio.

Can anyone throw a spoiler-free bone to me? I don't see where the story is, it's just events where buncha crap I don't know gets namedropped, it's a cheese grater of casual filter. I am usually opposed to superfluous explanations, but when your world is just so out of ordinary you at least kind of need to present a POV that digests the world to the reader a little bit.

So I just finished this after seeing all the hype for it.
It wasn't that good. People call this book a masterpiece but, honestly, I don't see it, even though I did sort of enjoy it. The author prides himself on making a "hard-to-read" book when it's just written obtusely for no purpose other than shoving it in peoples' faces and saying "this is no entry level fantasy epic, bucko."
Hell, it isn't even that hard to read. The characters shit exposition every chapter so you always know they're explaining a previous event, foreshadowing a future one or telling you something about the world.
Speaking of the world, what the fuck are those names even supposed to be? There is no consistency at all. It's like he used a random generator or worse, he made up names that "look" fantasy enough.

The Book of the New Sun was hard to read with a purpose. It made you think about things, it made you question the narrator, it had a lot of literary value past making up contrivances for the purpose of showing your fellow authors and your readers how cool you are for not explaining things properly and writing like a madman.

Am I the only one with these opinions?

>some character gets called "barghast"
>What the fuck is a barghast?
>go to the glossary
>"The Barghast were a non-human pastoral nomadic warrior society"
Wow, that helped me so much. Can't this fucking cunt at least describe how the different races look like before using them to refer to characters? It's getting quite annoying

it's good but impossible to fully conceptualize with the audio. i keep getting lost as soon as i stop devoting 100% of my attention to it. i'll have to pick up the text and reread it later this week. the world seems impossibly deep.

Hello, /lit/.

After several months of history books, I want to back to reading fantasy. I have heard some positive and some negative things about this series.
What are your main problems with it and does it decline in quality after the first book?

Thanks.

Just finished this I'm not sure I liked it and I don't know if I'm in for the long haul. I respect the author's worldbuilding and usually enjoy not getting handholding exposition but even so, his ending converged so messily and his power dynamics were so arcane and obscure it didnt feel mysterious to me after a whole, only tiresome. fucking Lorn got rekt by some rando Tiste Andii (that will turn out to have an epic backstory in book 754, I suppose) that was bs. Also I got Rake shoved down my throat as the coolest baddest fucker ever but I don't want to swallow

Maybe I should give book 2 a chance, I don't know guys

Finished about %25 of this.

Story is going fine but I sometimes find the descriptions of the scenes quite ostentatious. Seriously I m not the one who'd brag about his vocabulary but I felt like dude was writing with an open thesaurus next to his pen.
