Oh also the really oldschool 40k books are actually pretty /lit/. Inquisitor and Space Marine by Ian Watson were the first two Black Library books I think, and they have that sort of 2000AD vibe of the original 40k. Plus they have a bunch of non canon stuff like squats. (Gaymes Workshop rereleased them and edited all that stuff out.)

Dan Abnett is legitimately good, especially the Eisenhorn books, which are what most people say to read first anyway. Other than that, I think the really old school shit is dope. Ian Watson wrote the very first 40k novels, Inquisitor, Space Marine, Harlequin, and they are pretty fucking wild. Supposedly Stanley Kubrick even considered making a movie of either Inquisitor or Space Marine, I can't remember which. There's also another old one called The Eye of Terror by J Barrington Bayley that's weird and good. I've heard Aaron Dembski-Bowden's shit is good but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Oh yeah, and Crossfire by Matthew Farrer is really well written. There are sequels, but they feel rushed.
But most all of the newer shit sucks imo
