The two men trudged onward, the heat soaking their rags even as the sun descended the mountains to their back.
"The Chain," the elder whispered every so often while The Kid was forever in his thoughts until that word came.
And with it came visions, as if the long tract they wandered was somehow wrapped like a blanket and joined at the far ends, creating a great absence; but within the absence came another tract warped just as the one they trod on. If the great absence, which wasn't an accurate name but counting was all The Kid knew, was large enough, these tracts should never touch. But if one drifted far enough, even without much force, the collision would join the two, at least temporarily. The Kid wondered what would happen if he was there when the worlds met. When "The Chain" jangled.
