I will be very clear. I have not read Finnegans Wake, but I am the author of this image which I've posted a few times on /lit/. Still, it's something I'd like to do eventually, since I checked out a copy from the library as a kid and learned about the memes.

Reading "around" it also led me into some great reading about the Book of Kells (Henry), I did this other thread recently which came about through reading extensively about the Book of Kells for no other reason than the pic on the Penguin FW cover.

OP, it's not so much being smart, as being culturally prepped/well read, to understand and pick up on the various memes/jokes/references. I've read almost none of what I'm about to quote you, but it's clear to me that reading this stuff is a big help.

-Iliad/Odyssey (Ulysses prep).
-Some Plato/Aristotle (prep since Joyce received a classical Western education and used that in his stuff)
-a brief history of Ireland, take your pick (cultural grounding)
-Joyce's major works: Dubliners, Potrait, Ulysses (natch, a progression for understanding what comes later)
-Vico, New Science (purported to be a basis for the Wake)

-Personally, I found it useful to read large books about the Book of Kells (that edition's image) and the Bayeux Tapestry over a year ago, for general cultural grounding and out of personal interest. Still, the above for their own sake at the time.

Afterbirth-literature on the subject includes the McLuhan's works (father and son), the McKenna book and/or the "Skeleton key", I forget which is which here.

Actually finding the other thunderwords on a web page (much less in the book itself) turned out to be a pain in the ass, so I made this.

Serious reply: consider reading the work of Marshall McLuhan and later his son's work, who followed him (pic related).

Also have a look at the other Thunders (and not just that first one). They seem to suggest various aspects of human life, although Mcluhan favored shoehorning them in as memes, to fit his stages of technology speculations.

I wish to point out, since I've seen this story before, that in pic related I actually took the trouble to count up the thunders' letters (bottom center). A cruder analysis, but bothering to even do so is related to OP's thing.

Hello /lit/. I got a gift card for Christmas, and after some hemming and hawing, I decided to get a copy of Finnegans Wake.

The book is a meme of course, and I was aware of this years ago, having checked out a copy from the library and thumbing through it as a kid, even finding where the word "quark" came from. But later, when a friend gave me a copy of a Marshall Mcluhan's book "War and Peace in the Global Village", I realized that there are a bunch of long, important words in the book (just like the one on the first page), which he (Mcluhan) called /thunderwords/. Then I got busy with other things until I got my own copy of the above recently.

Anyway, I found searching the subject to be kind of a pain in the ass, so I made you and me some DANK OC: an infographic on the thunderwords, or "thunders" - note also the similarity of the words "thunder" and "hundred".

I hope that someone will get a kick out of this. SEE IF YOU CAN FIND ANY TYPOS!
