Can I get some recommendations for books about prison? A lot of the books I find on lists are poorly written (ya know, since prisoners probably aren't the best writers), extremely politically motivated (only writing about prison in the context of reform, demographics, voting etc), or fictional.

I'm looking for well written first hand accounts or informative books about the prison system as a whole (history, federal/share prisons etc).

Im not sure of anything anymore.
I used to be a communist then a liberal, now I just don't hold any convictions. I think I might be afraid of defending something that can be crushed by another point of view. I believe there isn't anything completely true therefore I stay away from convictions. I don't think I have a problem with that but I fear the rest of the people will and that I may never feel secure about anything or be capable of understanding someone else.
Ive read a little bit of philosophy here and there, Socrates, Plato, Seneca, Agustin, Descartes, Nietzsche, Stirner, Camus and Unamuno. I believe Im im this state because Im midway trough philosophy or something and Im just confused as fuck.
Any advice?
