I've asked this in several threads, never got an answer though but here we go again.

I've read one John Green book, Looking for albuquerque, and in it there is some bullshit explanation for why the protagonist had to start smoking. It kept the mosquitoes away or some shit.
Then my pleb GF dragged me along to Fault in our stars, and there's this bullshit smoking thing again.
So, does John Green have a thing about cigarettes? Are they apparent in all his work in some way?
