Which one is the better word to refer to something characterized by English writer Thomas Hobbes' philosophical notions?

This isn't entirely /lit/ related, but I imagine this board has some of the better English writers. Consequently, you guys may be best suited to answer the above. I have noticed both words used for the same thing, but don't quite know which is ideal.
