Nietzsche did not distinguish himself in Greek and Latin; he was not at all a “striver,” but rather thoughtful. With things that didn’t interest him, like the Anabasis or Cicero, he did only what was necessary. Wilamowitz, who was a few grades below him, had decidedly more aptitude for classical studies. It was only when it came to Sophocles and Homer that Nietzsche became more enthusiastic. He actually did poorly in mathematics. Only in German was he perhaps the best in Pforta for many years. Back then he was also writing a lot on the side, as we know now, and that took time away from his schoolwork.
