Cambridge's Reading Latin series is what we used at Ohio State. I think you could do the course on your own if you bought the study guide (read answer key). I basically taught myself Latin 3 because my teacher was such a lazy fuck-wit.

After doing the book, I have had no trouble reading Jerome's vulgate on my own, albeit with a dictionary handy. I think 1.5 years leading to reading real latin is a pretty good rate, so I'd recommend it. Once I finish up John, I think I am going to attempt to read Aquinas' commentary on it in Latin; I'm not sure how ready I am though for church latin as the course is largely predicated on Cicero and Sallust.
