The illuminatus trilogy makes no sense as a book series. It's a disjointed, heavily symbolized, heavily satirical odyssey about all the conspiracy theories come true. Reading it as a young man in 2020, and knowing it was written in 1975, I believe this is the work of authors that were heavily invested in the youth rebellion of the 60's, and learned along the way many of the mechanisms of the military industrial complex, the financial sector, and the hidden privilege groups consolidating ever more power into their hands. They also learned, or believed they learned which is the same thing to a radical, the nature of this world as a simulation composed of the mental pressure of each person and thing acting on the world, and they learned there is no fundamental difference between a person and a thing, to horrible and beautiful ends. And their resistance fell apart because each person assumed that they would eventually all move toward a perfect shared reality, most could not accept that others would like to live in different "realities" than them, and almost none could accept that these "realities" were not mutually exclusive, and you can live in any one you want (a capitalist reality, a communist reality, an absurdist reality, a gnostic reality, a christian reality, a muslim reality) without requiring that any other human do the same. And I think the authors found all this out and like many academics they predicted the explosive growth of consolidated capital and subsequent degradation of the human

The Illuminatus! Trilogy
any short stories by Dick or Asimov (I prefer Asimov)
Catch-22
Ficciones by Borges (haven't read his other collections, but I've heard they're good)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (At least the first one, decide from there)
Out of the Silent Planet (best of Lewis's space trilogy)
the Discword Series (not really 'literature', but highly entertaining and well written)

These dudes aren't wrong, but get an annotated 'The Name of the Rose'. There's no reason for a paragraph of Latin every other page.

Yes. I'm sorry.
90% of 'sci-fi' is awful garbage.
You still have Asimov though.

Will I enjoy these books if I've become really paranoid and frustrated about the whole 9/11 was an inside job, corporations control the world, new world order is soon upon us thing?
