The trouble I personally have with recommending romanian literature to non-romanians is that I think it doesn't translate well to foreign audiences. There's many idioms and modes of thought that I'm not sure will resonate with the non-romanian mind because a lot of our authors were very much regionalists (if that's even a word).

I've often heard one of our books, The Hatchet, being described as if it would have been an international classic if it was written in a "universal language", aka english or french or russian. I don't personally agree, since I think it's a somewhat basic mystery novel whose only outstanding feature is that the protagonist is an older peasant woman, but I do believe that the romanian language translates poorly into non-romanian ones, and a lot is lost in the translation.

Also a lot of our writers were many times products of their time, and a lot of what they wrote would make no sense to non-romanians.

The Smiths are so inconsistent. Half of 'Meat is Murder' is amazing and the other half is goddamn boring, same with their s/t. 'The Queen is Dead' is massively overrated.
