Fun fact that most of you probably don't know about: in the study of fascism in early-twentieth century Australia, there is a prominant theory that Lawrence's 1923 novel Kangaroo, which tells the story of a secret fascist organisation in Australia, was based on an actual organisation of this kind, whose members he met in Woollongong, the city where he was staying at the time. The theory has prominent supporters and critics, but it well-regarded, even by those that reject it, although conclusive proof either way is impossible. For this reason, Lawrence's novel Kangaroo occupies a strange place in Australian historiography.

Another strange cross-over of Lawrence and Australian fascism is his friendly discussions with P. R. Stephensen in France in 1927. Stephensen, who was still a communist at the time, was inspired by his meeting with Lawrence and eventually became Australia's most committed Nazi sympathiser, founding a pro-Nazi political movement in 1941 called the Australia-First Movement, whose members included Miles Franklin (one of Australia's most famous authors) and Adele Pankhurst (ex-communist and member of the famous feminist Pankhurst family).
