There's a village in the world where only immortals live. The idea is that after several lifetimes' worth of experiences, losses and triumphs, this is the only logical place for them to live.

I don't really know where to go with it, but I thought it'd be interesting to explore immortality from the perspectives of different types of people.

You're judging DFW's *writing* based on his interviews. DFW doesn't come off as particularly illuminating or articulate in his interviews because he was an incredibly shy, troubled person with self-esteem issues and that shows through during them more than anything.

Why don't you actually read his writing before you make a judgement about it, because it's pretty obvious that you haven't read a single page of Infinite Jest let alone 1080. If you had, you simply wouldn't be making such inane comments.

This is not to say you have to LIKE Wallace or Infinite Jest, but if you read even 100 pages of it, you would at least recognize it as the product of an exhaustively exceptional mind regardless of your personal taste for the book. You would be hard pressed to find an author who worked as hard and cared as much. Or knew as much.

The thing about Infinite Jest is that it is surprisingly accessible. Yes, it is often verbose, but it is also often not. (Wallace uses "like" the way teenage girls do an awful lot). It is a read that requires a dedication similar to the author's, but it is not as if the ideas and themes presented within--human obsessions and desires, distractions, happiness, drug use, etc.--are esoteric. They quite relatable.

The irony with all the people passing off DFW and IJ as pretentious 'hipster' dribble are doing so under the aegis of a kind of hipster attitude. Wallace gets prejudged a whole heck of a lot by people who have not read him. He's somewhat revered on /lit/ and IJ is often drooled over. People see this and decide they don't want to be a part of it. So they play the skeptic. They project distaste for what everyone else seems to love. Sure is hipster in here.
