I like this; i think it's trying to capture a dark nightmare type feeling, surreal and scary. I didnt mind the repetition of the word "hell" too much until I hit "blackest hell" and that phrase just sounds so...mall goth. I'd be interested to hear about your inspirations for this one.

The problem with Constance Garnett is simply that she's dry. Dostoevsky wants to create a world in which evil is in the very air and demons are scratching to get in. When they do the characters lose their minds, rant, rave, scream, go mad, commit terrible acts etc. Garnett reduces this all to people having attacks of "hysterics." It's very Victorian/Edwardian. She was definitely a product of her surroundings but should be respected nonetheless for being a pioneer.
