From where did the modern obsession with absurdity stem?

Is there something about the modern world that we must escape to prevent ourselves from going insane, adopting jokes and fantasy worlds to compensate.

For example, I think this painting would find a new appreciation with the modern world if striped of its sincerity by means of slapping meme faces and large Helvetica text on it.

so i do some improv in my hometown and im decent at it...a guy i know wants me to write for some pilot he's doing or something..he said it will be a paid position (not much, independent) i said yes because it's an opportunity but i've never written anything really. anyone have any experience in writers rooms? any advice someone can give me i'm nervous
