The reason a lot of people don't like late pynchon is because he evolved as a writer. Against the days and bleeding edge are fundamentally different books from gravity's rainbow. Gravity's rainbow is the quintessential post modern book, which aims to not only challenge the idea of what literature, art, and humanity is, but also challenge the reader's will to read with it's layers of perversion and complexity. Many readers find this challenge enjoyable, which is understandable. Against the days and bleeding edge, however, are examples of the emerging style of the future, much less cruel to the reader, certainly less difficult, and much more geniune with it's intentions. As such there exists two different pynchon readers who read one half of him, enjoy him, but can't enjoy the opposing half of his oeuvre. Mason dixon serves as a sort of meeting ground between the two pynchies but the divide is still real.
On a second note are there rumors about pynchon's hypothetical next book?
