I need to rant about this shit. I haven't read a book cover to cover in 5 years and somehow I ended up reading this shit over 3 days.

I feel tricked. Halfway through I realized this book was more trouble than it was worth, but I trudged on reading all the fictitious footnotes and quotes from mock-critics in hopes that my patience would be rewarded by some mind blowing climax where everything gets tied together. But no, it just becomes more and more ridiculous and in the end the author blatantly destroys the "realism" of the universe that he so painstakingly created with all his bullshit footnotes.

I wanted a cool horror story about a transforming house with a maze and a minotaur. I got half a tedious, dry, ironically academic character study of a boring ass family and half a guy drone on about his sex life before he goes full schizo.

Have you read House of Leaves before? I think the author did it pretty well, not emphasizing the character's actions but his situation as a product of madness without the character implying he'd gone mad.

Decided to pick up this book for kicks.

>A fictional movie within an essay within a fictional story.
>Story-ception.
>Navidson Record was interesting, JT's story was not.
>Last 1/4 of book, JT's story became literally pages of rambling on about nonsense, ended up skipping a few pages entirely of random rambling.

As an aspiring writer myself, I found this book very creative, and it was a fresh read on that front, but I didn't enjoy reading it as much as I thought.

What are your thoughts on this "found footage" book?

>main character goes to a party at the house and discovers something in the basement
>bunch of people die
>house was used to film snuff movies
>it's also a gateway to hell
>but it was maybe all in the protagonist's head

What are some of your favorite books with some sort of gimmick, in the realms of Tree of Codes, JJ Abrams' and Doug Dorst's S, and the works of Mark Z. Danielewski?

I thoroughly enjoy the books-within-books idea as well that many of these gimmick-y books implement (but the thread is not limited to just that).
