What am I in for?

So who was he really?

books where the protagonist is writing the book we're reading or books where the protagonist knows he's the protagonist in a book?

Best way to read this? Bouncing between the poem + index or cover to cover?

Pale Fire and Lolita, is there anything else a must read in his collections?

These were both incredible books but his writing is kind of off putting. I have a copy of glory and it is nearly unreadable.

Pale fire thread too just finished. Hated it until the index now I like it, like IJ or HoL but tighter structure

Love the book, but I still question whether or not the poem is supposed to be "good" and a representation of Shade's skill, or it's Nabakov dicking around and showing off his ability to make some over the top flowery Frost like poetry.

I'm doing a year of advanced creative writing at university.
I've already started to "pale fire" the whole thing.
That is, use the ancillary writings of the course to craft a larger and separate narrative apart from my finished pieces.
Most assignments ask for a commentary of a few 100 words to explain your process of writing a thing. The course really wants you to use the online class forums a lot too. I can also send emails to my tutor.
I'm going to impress or shock everyone by creating a masterpiece under the noses. The whole time they're gonna think I'm a weird pretentious asshole who can't shut up about his personal life, when really I'm playing 4D litterrary chess.
The other people in my class, they'll never see it coming. I've read some of their work, they're never gonna make it. They're not trying for greatness, they're just trying to write. I've only heard them reference YA fiction.

Any important context literature before diving into this?

I like that it had a reference page with a bit of “back story”. I enjoyed reading it. I did notice a hunt of Danielewski's "House of Leaves" in there as well with the layered storytelling

but I don't think another book will ever make me feel as uneasy as Pale Fire did. I mean... fuck. It's hard to even talk about. Why would anyone write a protagonist like that? How did I make it through to the end?

Was the narrator gay?

I've read books like Lolita, Crime and Punishment, Death of Ivan Ilyich, Hunger, To the Lighthouse... Will I be able to understand Pale Fire? It'd be my second Nabokov. Is there something else I should read before Pale Fire instead? Thank you.

nabokov has no soul. mechanically he is close to perfection.
