why are these novels so long?
it's enough that you're reading trash fantasy lit, why do they have to waste your time while you're at it?

So I am reading A Song of Ice and Fire at the moment. My friend knows about fantasy books, and he said that this other series is better. The problem is I don't remember the name. I think it has something to do with time. Does /lit/ know it?

So, I want to do a re-read to catch up on anything I might have missed in these books in preparation for TWOW. However, I want to do a different type of re-read where I do individual characters at a time. So, I'll read completely through one character's story, and then restart once that character's story ends with a different character.

Only question is: Is there an ideal order to do this in? My first idea was just to read the first character's chapter (Bran), follow that until the end, then move onto the second character's chapter (Catelyn), finish her story, and so on. But I realized that this might not be ideal. I might actually do it by family: First the Starks, then the Greyjoys, then the Lannisters, etc.. Or I could do it based on geography. I don't know.

Has anyone done this kind of re-read for ASOIAF before? What would you recommend.

Haters please leave

I am 50 pages through GoT and feeling overwhelmed by the bazillion characters and places I have to keep track of. I have read epic works of fiction before (e.g. The Dark Tower), but I could do without any form of character/location tracking.

Could you please give me tips and recommendations on how to do character/location "bookkeeping" as I read works like ASoIaF?

Thanks a ton!

Hey /lit/,

since I don't know where else to ask, I figured this board would be the best place.

I have started reacing the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" saga last year and am currently at the last book. Since I really enjoy the books, I would like to know what else there is, (high?) fantasy written in a similar style.

It will be quite some time until GRRM released the next book and I have really come to love the genre and his way of writing. I would appreciate it, if this thread did not turn into a "TV series vs the books" discussion.

Thanks in advance!

Sup, I was wondering what fantasy books you guys would recommend, I read a song of ice and fire series, the inheritance series (not that good), just started the lord of the rings, and tried to read the malazan series but it was not for me, so any fantasy books that you guys like? Series in particular you can recommend?

Do you think ASOIAF will become the next LOTR?

I've been thinking of the success of asoiaf and I was weighing the idea of it becoming the next landmark in fantasy literature after LOTR and The Hobbit. Obviously its hard to predict what will happen but I've thought of a few points for and against it becoming the next LOTR.

Points For:
- GRRM has become an enormous success financially (especially with AGOT being considered one of the best shows ever) which will encourage imitators to try and replicate his success
- GRRM has taken fantasy literature to places it has never been before. GRRM has introduced elements of realism into fantasy which is considered a rather lofty, tapped-out genre. Tolkien is famous to creating "modern fantasy". GRRM has obviously changed the genre and perhaps his work will be considered a major turning point in fantasy literature.
- GRRM has done something similiar to Shakespeare and Chaucer in the sense that he has created a vast catalogue of characters that are all very real and cover a massive range of the human psyche.
- GRRM has added a level of detail to his work that is not often seen in literature

Hey /lit/, I don't go on here often, but my curiosity has gotten the better of me.

So, how do you all feel about A Song Of Ice And Fire?

I personally think it's amazing: Beautiful scenery descriptions, deep, thick plotlines, and a rich and textured history in a fictional world. Sure, GRRM lifted a few things from Tolkien, but the guy basically MADE modern fantasy, and most fantasy series' lift more than Martin did.
So, opinions?
