What's the deal with the Elric reading order? Some people read them in order of publishing, while some read by the world chronology, but others just seem to stick to reading the 1970's novels. Are each of the novels largely self contained, like Robert Howard's Conan stories? Or are more episodic with developing arcs and characters across the arcs?

I've an omnibus coming in the mail that collects stories in this order and I was wondering what to read first:

Elric of Melniboné (1972) The Fortress of the Pearl (1989) The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (1976) The Dreaming City (1961) While the Gods Laugh (1961) The Singing Citadel (1967)
