"Nyarlathotep" is my favorite work by H.P. Lovecraft, but it's a poem so no plot.

For the Cthulhu mythos (which has a lot of weird monsters and hopeless protagonists), read:

"The Call of Cthulhu"
"The Shadow Over Innsmouth"
"The Dunwich Horror"
"The Whisperer in the Darkness"
"From Beyond"
"The Colour Out of Space"
"The Horror at Redhook" (good old racism from when he lived in New York)
"At the Mountains of Madness"
"The Shadow Out of Time"
"The Silver Key"
"Through the Gates of the Silver Key"

I probably missed a few of the mythos stories, but I'm going off of memory here. "In the Walls of Eryx" isn't a mythos story, and Lovecraft set it in the future as opposed to his own time, but it's got tentacles and doom.

After you read most of Lovecraft's stories, a wonderful capstone is "Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath." This novella incorporates characters, gods, and lands he introduced in other stories. It's very different from his other works in that the character starts off with a good knowledge of things and worlds beyond ours, isn't crazy, and encounters crazy things on every page. It's not a horror story; it's a fantasy adventure with some frightening scenes.
